Role Summary
A Hygiene Promoter will lead community-based hygiene promotion activities in flood-affected or emergency-impacted areas. This role involves raising awareness of hygiene practices, distributing hygiene kits, conducting behavior-change sessions, supporting surveys, and ensuring strong community outreach and accountability, all while adhering to humanitarian and organizational standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Hygiene Promotion & Behavior Change
- Conduct health and hygiene education sessions in affected communities, tailoring communication for different groups (adults, children, elders, PWDs)
- Demonstrate and encourage best hygiene practices such as handwashing at critical times, safe water usage, environmental and food hygiene, menstrual hygiene management, and waste management
- Facilitate development or adaptation of IEC materials (posters, leaflets, flipcharts) in line with Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) and organizational guidelines
2. Hygiene Kit / NFI Distribution & Monitoring
- Identify and register beneficiaries according to criteria; support distribution of hygiene kits, water kits, sanitation kits, or other WASH-related items
- Educate beneficiaries on proper kit usage and monitor post-distribution usage (Post Distribution Monitoring, or PDM)
3. Surveys, Data Collection & Baseline/Endline
- Assist with KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, Practice) assessments or hygiene-related surveys before and after interventions
- Support hygiene baseline and endline data collection and documentation
4. Community Outreach & Social Mobilization
- Link with community structures (elders, CDCs, Shuras, local leaders) to build trust and facilitate participation in programs
- Organize community meetings, feedback sessions, and engagement forums to gather input and address concerns
- Promote campaigns like Global Handwashing Day, World Toilet Day, Breastfeeding Week, etc., to boost engagement and awareness
5. Coordination & Accountability
- Coordinate with health facilities (e.g., Health Field Offices), technical teams, district authorities, and MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, Learning) staff
- Facilitate community accountability mechanisms by informing residents about feedback channels and reporting any issues promptly
- Strictly follow organizational policies on safeguarding, Code of Conduct, PSEA (Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse), anti-corruption, and whistle-blowing
6. Reporting & Documentation
- Keep daily/weekly records of outreach sessions, beneficiary attendance, kit distribution, field visits, and success stories
- Report challenges and support documentation for internal and external stakeholders
Position Requirements
Educational & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Public Health, Environmental Health, or a related field
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in an NGO/development/Hygiene promotion context, especially in emergencies or WASH sectors
Skills & Competencies
- Effective communication skills in Pashto, Urdu, and English; ability to tailor messaging to diverse groups, including marginalized or vulnerable populations
- Emotional resilience and ability to operate under challenging emergency or remote field conditions
- Familiarity with PRA/RRA tools, KAP surveys, and participatory community development methods
- Computer literacy: MS Office (Word, Excel), MIS software; basic data recording and reporting capabilities
