Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Pakistan play a critical role in delivering essential health services but often face significant occupational and personal stressors that adversely impact their mental health and overall well-being. This project seeks to identify and understand these sources of stress through an initial qualitative assessment, followed by the design and implementation of a systematic, culturally adapted psychosocial intervention aimed at reducing stress and improving mental health outcomes among CHWs.
We are looking for a Psychologist Consultant to provide expert guidance and technical support in the project. The consultant will lead the qualitative assessment of stressors among CHWs, adapt off-the-shelf interventions/training and associated manuals to the local cultural and occupational context, and design and deliver training for non-specialist facilitators who will implement the intervention (training of trainers). Additionally, the consultant will provide ongoing support to ensure high-quality delivery of the intervention.
Scope of Work and Key Responsibilities

- Collaborate closely with the project team to plan and conduct in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 15-20 CHWs.
- Utilize psychological expertise to understand occupational and personal stress factors affecting CHWs’ mental health and well-being.
- Analyze qualitative data and contribute to thematic interpretation from a psychological perspective.
- Assist in the development of a structured baseline survey instrument, ensuring it captures the key stress factors identified through qualitative work and is suitable for broader assessment across the CHW population.
2. Intervention Adaptation
- Review off-the-shelf interventions, such as the standard PM+ intervention manual and supporting materials.
- Lead the contextual adaptation of training content and delivery modalities to reflect the local cultural, social, and occupational realities of CHWs.
- Broaden the scope of the intervention to include stress management for both mental health disorders and general psychosocial stressors.
3. Training and Capacity Building
- Develop a comprehensive training curriculum and materials tailored for non-specialist facilitators with diverse educational backgrounds.
- Deliver interactive training sessions to equip facilitators with skills in training/intervention delivery, and facilitation
Deliverables
- Short report on qualitative assessment of stressors impacting CHWs, with psychological analysis and suggestions for how to capture this information in a self-response survey.
- Adapted PM+ intervention manual and training curriculum customized for the local context.
- Training workshops conducted for non-specialist facilitators (training of trainers).
- Final technical report summarizing all contributions and lessons learned related to psychological aspects of the project.
